JESSE
WILLIAM CURTIS
A native son of the state of California who may well be proud of the reputation he has achieved during a long and useful career as lawyer and jurist is Judge Jesse W. Curtis, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California. He was born in 1865 at San Bernardino, and after completing his preparatory educational training in public schools entered the University of Southern California, graduating with the degree of Ph. B. in 1877. His legal training was obtained at the University of Michigan, which conferred on him the LL. B. degree in 1891.
That same year Judge Curtis was admitted to the California bar and entered upon the practice of his profession as a member of the firm of Curtis, Oster & Curtis, which became Curtis & Curtis in 1897. This partnership was dissolved in 1908 and he then practiced alone for a short time, becoming senior member of the firm of Curtis & McNabb in 1909.
From 1899 to 1903 Judge Curtis served as District Attorney of San Bernardino County. In 1915 he became Judge of the Superior Court of San Bernardino County, serving until 1923 when he became Judge of the Appellate Court, Second District. Since 1926 he has been Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California.
Judge Curtis is President of the West Highlands Citrus Association, Director of the San Bernardino National Bank and a Trustee of the University of Redlands. He holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California and San Bernardino County Bar Association, also the San Bernardino Valley Country Club and other organizations. In 1892 he married Ida Lucinda Seymour and they have three children, Margaret, Jesse William, Jr., and Helen Seymour.
