JAY S. CRAWFORD
Jay
S. Crawford has been an Alhambra resident for forty-two years; he and his two
children have attended the same schools, Park Elementary and Alhambra High
School, and all three of them had the same eighth grade teacher, Florence Bevington. Mrs.
Crawford is also a graduate of Alhambra High School.
With
Douglas Aircraft Company since 1936, Mr. Crawford is now Chief Draftsman in the
SkyBolt subdivision of the Missiles and Space Systems
Division. His job is to develop and
control drafting practices and procedures as required by company and customer
specifications. A registered mechanical
engineer, Jay S. Crawford was born on July 12, 1917, in Los Angeles, coming to
Alhambra with his parents, Jay H. and Frances A. (Wesseler)
Crawford, in 1919. His father was a
native of Hutchinson, Kansas; his mother was from Cologne, Germany.
After
graduating from Alhambra High School in 1935, Mr. Crawford attended Pasadena
Junior College for one year, and also took evening and correspondence courses
from the University of California at Los Angeles. In addition to his work at Douglas Aircraft
Company, Mr. Crawford is interested in building apartment houses in
Alhambra. His current building, for
which he drew up his own plans, is The Lamplighter, eight unfurnished units, at
1721 Vine St.
Mr.
Crawford is a charter member and a Trustee of the Bethany Church of Alhambra,
the same church which his mother was Treasurer for many years and a charter
member. A member of the Alhambra
Planning Commission, Mr. Crawford is presently serving as its president. He was also a member of the Citizens and
Property Owners Committee for school bond issues, and is a member and Treasurer
of the Moor Boosters Club. A past member
of the Alhambra Civic Chorus, he is also a former member of the board of
directors of the Camp Fire Girls, and has been active in Boy Scout troop work.
At
the Bethany Church on June 28, 1940, Jay S. Crawford was married to the former
Miss Viola Jane Troudy, a native of Los Angeles, who
moved to San Gabriel with her family as a young child. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Crawford worked
for the Pacific Telephone Company in Alhambra for four years. She is presently Director of Women’s
Activities in the Bethany Church. The
Crawford’s are the parents of a son and a daughter: John Dennis, who attends Alhambra High
School, and Mrs. James D. (Kathleen Jane) Mills, who lives in San Gabriel and
is the mother of an infant son, James D., Jr.
Mr.
and Mrs. Crawford share a lively interest in music and combine their talents as
members of the church orchestra and choir.
Mr. Crawford plays the cello; his wife plays the violin and viola. Mr. Crawford also makes a hobby of
woodworking.
