DR. ARTHUR GARDINER COONS

 

Dr. Arthur Gardiner Coons, president of Occidental College, was born in Anaheim, California, June 13, 1900, son of Richard LaSalle and Mary Ella(Gardiner) Coons.

He received the A.B. degree from Occidental College in 1920; A.M. degree from University of Pennsylvania in 1922 and Ph.D. degree in 1927; honorary LL.D. degrees from Lewis and Clark College in 1946 from William Jewell College in 1949 and from Pomona College in 1951.

Dr. Coons was instructor of economics at Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, 1920-22; teacher at Anaheim, California Union High School, 1922-23, and at Fullerton, California Union High School and Junior College, 1923-24; instructor in economics at University of California at Los Angeles, 1924-27; assistant professor of economics at Occidental College, 1927-30, associate professor, 1930-36, professor, 1936-38, executive secretary to the president, 1927-31, dean of men, 1931-38, dean of faculty and professor of economics, 1943; professor of economics, Claremont College, 1938-43, director of studies, 1941-42; visiting professor and research fellow, California College, in China Foundation, 1933-34; research associate, Haynes Foundation, 1939-44; now president of Occidental College; trustee of Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, and Haynes Foundation, Los Angeles.

He was California State price executive, Office of Price Administration, 1942-43; associate regional price executive and Los Angeles District price officer in 1942; consultant to National Resources Planning Board, 1940-41; member of Advisory Council for California Medical Economic Survey, 1934-36; delegate to 9th International Conference Institute of Pacific Relations in 1945; advisor to the chief, United States Reparations Mission to Japan, 1945-46.

Dr. Coons was president of Western College Association, 1946-47; president of Educational Film Research Institute, 1946-47; president of Pacific Southwest Academy, 1936-38 and 1939-40; president of Pacific Coast Economic Association, 1940, and editor of Proceedings, 1937-39; member of American Economic Association, American Academy of Political & Social Science (editor of supplements and annals, 1932-33, 35, 37, 39); Social Science Research Conference (Pacific Coast Group; president, 1941); member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Kappa Alpha, and Pi Gamma Mu Fraternities.

Democrat; Presbyterian; and member of the following clubs: Town Hall of Los Angeles (first vice president, 1940-49; president, 1950), University, Jonathan, California (Los Angeles); Twilight, University (Pasadena, California).

Dr. Coons is the author of “The Foreign Public Debt of China,” 1930); “Economic Reconstruction in China” (pamphlet), 1934; “Five Years of National Finance” (China), 1934; “An Economic and Industrial Survey of the Los Angeles and San Diego Areas,”1941; also contributor to technical and science publications.

On February 9, 1927, Dr Coons married Mary Edna Palmer and they have one son, Arthur Gardiner, Jr.
