HENRY BLANTON COLVER
MYRTLE DANIELS COLVER
Henry
Blanton Colver was born in Bellingham, Washington, on August 1, 1904. His mother, the former Mamie Blanton of
Missouri, passed away during Henry’s early childhood. His father, Robert C. Colver, was born near
Waverly, Nebraska, in 1873. Following the
death of his wife, he moved his family to Bend, Oregon, where his two children,
Henry and Virginia, attended elementary and high schools. After his graduation in 1924, Henry worked
for three years in the lumber and sawmill
business. Then for nineteen years, he
was employed in the dairy and ice cream business and operated the Sun Gold
Dairy for a number of years.
In
1929 he married Berenice Zufelt. Their son, Jay Clair Colver, was born on
April 20, 1932, and at the present time, resides in Orem, Utah, and is employed
with the Press at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
In
1944, Henry, with his family, moved to California and settled in Alhambra. He was employed in the cabinet and store
fixture business for several years.
He
was divorced in January of 1947, after which he married his present wife, the
former Myrtle Daniels of Albion, Nebraska, on February 22, 1948.
In
1950 Mr. Colver founded the Buckeye Remodeling Company, 322 South Palm Avenue
in Alhambra, where he has done a large share of commercial remodeling and store
fixture installations. From a small
beginning, the business has expanded to the point that a new building had to be
constructed at 32 Palm Avenue in June of 1961, and the staff was enlarged to
handle the demand for the company’s services, which now extend over the entire
southern California area.
Mr.
Colver is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
at present being affiliated with the Genealogical Committee.
When
he takes time off from his active business life, he likes a good game of golf.
Myrtle
Daniels Colver was born on July 12, 1906, near Albion, Nebraska. Her father, William B. Daniels, was born on
May 1, 1873, near Willmar, Minnesota. He
married Hattie Esther Sutton, who was born on August 1, 1873, in Peru,
Indiana. They were married on July 2,
1892, in Albion, Nebraska, and had been married 58 years when Mr. Daniels
passed away on July 7, 1950, in Sacramento, California. His wife passed away on March 7, 1953, in Alhambra,
California. Both are buried in Forest
Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
Mrs.
Colver moved to Norfolk, Nebraska in 1910.
She attended elementary and Norfolk High School and following her
graduation she started her career with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company
on February 1, 1926. During this
employment, Mrs. Colver had the thrill of handling the first overseas telephone
call to London, England, from Norfolk, Nebraska. When the new telephone building was erected
on Madison Avenue in Norfolk, Mrs. Colver handled the first official long
distance call placed over the new switchboard.
She
married Leo Donald Mehring in 1927.
There were two children from this marriage, a son, Vernon Lee Mehring,
born on February 1, 1928, in Norfolk, Nebraska, and Shirley Elaine Mehring,
born on June 27, 1929, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Both children are living at the present time in West Covina,
California. The Mehring’s
were divorced on November 5, 1930.
During
the month of June, 1941, Mrs. Colver spent her vacation in California, and was
so delighted with the Golden State that she returned to Nebraska, resigned from
the Telephone Company and moved to California in October of 1941. She and her two children settled in Alhambra
in April of 1942, at which time she re-instated with the Pacific Telephone
Company, to further her career. Later
she was promoted to Supervisor and then to Assistant Chief Operator, a position
which she held for many years. Mrs. Colver
transferred to the El Monte Toll Office on May 11, 1960, about a month prior to
the official opening of this office. She
retired on July 16, 1961, after serving 32 years and eleven months of
employment with the Telephone Company.
She
met Henry B. Colver in 1947, and they were married on February 22, 1948. They purchased a home in Alhambra at 1036
South Fourth Street in 1953. She is an
active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is
presently serving as Secretary of the East Los Angeles Stake Relief Society,
and is the Junior Sunday School Librarian.
She became a member of the Telephone Pioneers after twenty-one years of
service, and now holds a life membership.
Mrs.
Colver is the secretary and bookkeeper for her husband’s business. She is interested in the study of genealogy
and during her spare time is compiling information on her family history. Both Mr. and Mrs. Colver enjoy ballroom, as
well as square dancing and when they wish to relax from it all, they spend a
weekend at their mountain cabin at Lake Tahoe, California.
