ARCH R. CLIFTON
Arch R. Clifton, a well known and
successful educator of Southern California, is capably filling the responsible
position of county superintendent of schools in Los Angeles County. He is a native of Wisconsin, born in Muscoda,
Grant County, and was graduated from the University of Wisconsin with the
degree of Bachelor of Philosophy in 1908.
Nine years later, in 1917, the degree of Master of Arts was conferred
upon him by the University of Southern California.
While still a resident of the Badger state Mr.
Clifton was a school teacher of New Lisbon, Wisconsin, from 1901 until 1904,
and subsequently taught at Reedsburg, Wisconsin, from 1905 until 1908. After coming to the Pacific coast he served
as high school principal at Monrovia, California, from 1913 until 1918, when he
was made superintendent of schools in that city, thus serving until 1931. Since the latter year he has filled the
position of county superintendent of schools in Los Angeles County and has
proved splendidly qualified for the important duties devolving upon him in this
connection, at all times maintaining the highest and most advanced educational
standards.
A prolific writer, Mr. Clifton has
contributed most interesting articles to the Thrift Magazine, Sierra
Educational News and Nation’s Schools.
He is a recognized specialist in the field of educational administration
and is president of the California Association for Education in Thrift and
Conservation. He was, for a number of
years active in the Boy Scout movement as commissioner and is a member of the
Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and the University Club of Monrovia. He is also a member of the Consultant Board
of the Nation’s Schools, for which he has done some writing, and the State
Council of Education of the California Teachers Association. Fraternally he is a member of the Masons and
the Knights of Pythias. His home is at
133 North Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia.
