HERSCHEL L.
CARNAHAN
A man of high principles and substantial qualities, well grounded in the fundamental principles of jurisprudence, progressive in business and loyal in citizenship, Herschel L. Carnahan, of Los Angeles, has won for himself an enviable place in the legal circles of the state, and earned the high regard and universal esteem of both bench and bar.
Mr. Carnahan is a native of Illinois, and was born in 1878 at Aledo. After receiving his preparatory educational training in public grammar and high schools of his native state he attended Monmouth College until 1896, when he moved to California. He located at Riverside and engaged in the study of law under the supervision of William Collier.
In 1900 Mr. Carnahan was admitted to the California bar and entered practice at Riverside in partnership with his former preceptor under the firm name of Collier & Carnahan, which became Collier, Carnahan & Craig in 1908. In 1919 Mr. Carnahan moved to Los Angeles. In addition to his legal practice he took part in many of the activities of Riverside while residing there, serving as Trustees of the County Law Library, Director of the Riverside Public Library for eight years, and President of the Library board for four years.
Since locating in Los Angeles Mr. Carnahan has built up an extensive clientele. He has conducted many important pieces of litigation, and in 1927 was appointed one of the receivers of the California-Eastern Oil Company and the Julian Petroleum Company by Federal Judge McCormick. During the time he served as State Corporation Commissioner he made one of the best officials in California.
Mr. Carnahan holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California, and Los Angeles County Bar Association. In 1906 he married Hattie Nelmer.
