CHAFFEE
NEWMAN BURTON, D.D.S.
As
one of the oldest practicing dentists in Alhambra in length of service, Dr.
Chaffee Newman Burton has a prominent place in the dental profession in the San
Gabriel Valley. Starting his practice in
1924 at 230 West Main Street in Alhambra, Dr. Burton moved to his present
location at 220 South First Street in Alhambra in 1941.
Dr.
Burton is a native of southern California.
Of religious parentage he was born in Garden Grove on August 23, 1895,
to Nelson J. Burton and Gertrude (Staub) Burton. His father, a Methodist minister, born in a
log cabin in Ohio, was a very devout man who off and on preached in the
Mountain View Church in Temple City since 1915.
The Reverend Burton died in 1935.
After
attending several elementary schools, Dr. Burton graduated from Pasadena High
School in 1916. During the First World
War he served in the Medical Reserve as ASC.
He received the degree of D.D.S. from the University of Southern
California in 1921, and was instructor at the same University from 1921 to
1923. He started to practice dentistry
in 1923.
Dr.
Burton’s wife is Frances (Graves) Burton from Kansas City, Missouri. The young couple was married by Dr. Burton’s
father in the Methodist Parsonage in Kingsburg, California on February 11,
1923.
Mrs.
Burton is a past president of the PTA and still active in the
organization. She has been
a member of the school board for six years and is a past president of the Exchangettes.
The
Burton’s have two sons and four grandchildren.
The older son, Chaffee N. Burton is a chiropodist in Lancaster. Richard Francis Burton, who served in the
Navy in World War II and was awarded the bronze medal, works for Pacific Clay
Corporation.
Active
in civic and fraternal affairs, Dr. Burton has the distinction of being the
oldest member of the Alhambra Exchange Club which he joined in 1926, and of
which he is a past president. He was
also an enthusiastic vocalist with the Echoaires of
this Club. His college fraternity was Xi
Psi Phi.
He
takes an active interest in the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, and is a member
of the Elks—Alhambra Lodge No. 1328—BPOE.
For
diversion Dr. Burton enjoys hunting, fishing, and golf.
