HARRY STROHM BUCHANAN

The city of Rosemead has to its credit many loyal, long-time citizens who worked actively over a period of years for its incorporation, not the least of whom was Harry Strohm Buchanan who worked on all three attempts at cityhood, and who, when the dream became a reality, did not sit back and rest, but went on to new responsibility to make cityhood for Rosemead a real step forward for all of its citizens and for the general area.  Mr. Buchanan was a member of Rosemead’s first city council, and the following year began a successful term as mayor.  He is presently on the city planning commission, a position he will hold for three more years, and is also a member of the historical committee of the City of Rosemead.  He is a past member of the board of directors of the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce, and in the past did a great deal of work, for about three years, on behalf of the installation of sewers for the area, all in spite of the fact that he is not a young man, but is giving his city of his experience gained by maturity.

Born on August 28, 1885, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Mr. Buchanan’s parents were Andrew James and Clara (Strohm) Buchanan, natives of Indiana and Chicago, Illinois, respectively.  Mr. Buchanan attended elementary school in Ida Grove, Iowa, high school in Durango, Colorado, and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1908 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.

After graduating from college, Mr. Buchanan worked for the Telluride Power Co. and Utah Power and Light Co. at Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah, for thirteen years.  He came to Los Angeles in 1923 to work for the Department of Water and Power until his retirement in 1950.  For the next two years he worked for the City of Burbank, after which he was employed by the Fluor Corporation in Los Angeles for about seven years.

Mr. Buchanan is a member of Rosemead Masonic Lodge Number 702.

In Salt Lake City on April 24, 1915, Harry S. Buchanan was married to the former Miss Sara Strohm of Plainfield, Pennsylvania, and became the father of five children:  Alice Anita, who died in infancy; Ben Andrew, a graduate of El Monte High School who lives in Trona with his wife and a young daughter, Janet—his other daughter, Annette, living with the Buchanan’s and attending Muscatel School; Mrs. George (Harriet) Hansen, a graduate of El Monte High School who lives in Los Angeles and whose son by a previous marriage, Vernon Andrew Fueston, attends Rosemead High School; John Edgar, also a graduate of El Monte High School who lives in West Covina with his wife and adopted daughter, Shirley, who attends West Covina High School; and James Silas, who lives in San Gabriel with his wife and infant son, Kenneth.

Mr. Buchanan is an expert in photography, specializing in colored pictures.  His favorite recreations are traveling in the western United States, hiking and cabinet work.
