BARRY BRANNEN

 

Barry Brannen, attorney at law, was born on February 14, 1902, in Tucson, Arizona. He is the son of Phillip Cornelius and Elizabeth (Barry) Brannen.

He graduated from the University of California in 1922 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1925. He was admitted to the California bar in that year, and except for the war years, has practiced law continuously in Los Angeles ever since.

He entered the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander in 1942, and served on the Destroyer U.S.S. Tillman during the latter part of that year. He attended the Naval War College in 1943, and thereafter was assigned as assistant plans officer for the Eleventh Amphibious Force, then stationed in England. In June of 1944 he became the assistant operations officer for the Assault Force that made the attack on the coast of France.

In October, 1944, he was assigned as the first United States Naval representative on the Allied Control Commission for Rumania, and spent the next fifteen months in the Balkan area. Pursuant to his duties, he traversed most of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Hungary. Upon leaving Rumania he was assigned by the Office of Naval Intelligence to other duties which took him to Egypt, India, Turkey, Siam, Malaya, Indo-China, China and Japan.

For his services in the Normandy Invasion he was commended by the Commander of the United States Naval Forces in Europe, and for his services in Rumania, he received the Legion of Merit. For injuries sustained in the assault on Omaha Beach he received the Purple Heart.

In June 1946, he was ordered to inactive duty as a captain in the United States Naval Reserve and from that date has continued his legal practice in Los Angeles.

He is the author of “Discretionary Requirement of Bond in California” appearing in the September 1935 issue of California Law Review, “Conquest by Chicanery” published in the April 1951 issue of the United States Naval Institute Proceedings, and “The Soviet Conquest of Rumania” appearing in the April 1952 issue of Foreign Affairs.

He holds membership in the American Bar Association, Los Angeles Bar Association, Harvard Club of Southern California, University Club of Los Angeles, Bel Air golf Club, and Army and Navy Club of Washington, D.C.
