HON.
EDWARD R. BRAND
Hon.
Edward R. Brand, municipal judge of Los Angeles, is a native son of the city,
born May 24, 1903. His parents, Louis
and Cecilia (Berry) Brand, came to Los Angeles, California, from New York in
1896. The father, who was successfully
engaged in merchandising for a number of years, is now retired. The mother and the four sons of the family are
also living.
Edward
R. Brand attended the grammar and high schools of Los Angeles and acquired his
professional training as a student at the Southwestern University School of
Law, from which he was graduated with the of LL. B. in 1927. Thereafter he served as a deputy in the
office of the district attorney for a time and subsequently engaged in the
private practice of law in Hollywood. He
was justice of the peace in Universal City Township from 1930 until December
20, 1932, when he received appointment to the municipal bench from Governor Rolph. On the 6th
of June, 1933, he was elected to succeed himself in the office of municipal
judge of Los Angeles for a six-year term.
The large vote which he received reflected the confidence of his fellow
citizens in his judicial ability and his qualifications for the bench, and though
but thirty years of age, Judge Brand has fully demonstrated his fitness for his
high place. Boys are his hobby; in
dealing with youthful offenders who are brought before him in court, he has
ever manifested a spirit of helpfulness and humanitarianism, believing that
evil surrounds are largely to blame for their lawlessness and that proper
companionship and correct teaching will redeem them.
The
wife of Judge Brand was in her maidenhood Ruth White, a native of Los Angeles,
and a daughter of Louis and Fannie White.
A worthy exemplar of the teachings and purposes of the Masonic
fraternity, Judge Brand is a member of Westgate Lodge, No. 352, F. & A. M.;
Long Beach Consistory, A. A. S. R.; and Al Malaikah Temple, A. A. O. N. M.
S. He is also affiliated with the Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks and with the legal fraternity Sigma Tau. Along strictly professional lines he has
membership in the Los Angeles, California State and American Bar
Associations. He also belongs to the 233
Club and he finds needed recreation in hunting and fishing.
