FLETCHER BOWRON

 

Fletcher Bowron, mayor of Los Angeles, was born in Poway, San Diego County, California, on August 13, 1887; son of Samuel and Martha (Hershey) Bowron.

He was a student at the University of California 1907-1909, and at the University of Southern California 1909 to 1911.

Mayor Bowron was a newspaper reporter on the Los Angeles newspapers from 1911 to 1917. In 1917 he was admitted to the State Bar of California and was in law practice in Los Angeles from 1919 to 1922. From 1922 to 1925 he served as Deputy State Corporation Commissioner; executive secretary to the Governor of California, 1925 to 1926, Judge of Superior Court of Los Angeles County, California 1926 to 1938; elected mayor of Los Angeles at recall election on September 16, 1938, and re-elected in 1941, 1945 and 1949.

During World War I Mayor Bowron served with the 144th Field Artillery and later with Military Intelligence Division, United States Army, 1917-1918.

Past president of American Municipal Association, past trustee of United States Conference of Mayors, president of League of California Cities.

Decorated Knight of Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav; Mexican Order of Aztec Eagle; Legion of Merit (Chile); Commander Crown of Oak (Luxembourg); Medal Reconnaisance [sic] National Vermeil (France); Commander Order of Orange Nassau(The Netherlands).

Member of Native Sons of the Golden West; American Legion; Delta Chi Fraternity; Jonathan Club and Kiwanis Club (Los Angeles); belongs to the Methodist Church; Mason; and a Republican.

Mayor Bowron married Irene Martin on September 16, 1922, and they have one son, Barrett.
