FRANK
BOROWITZ
A
native of Austria and an expert at custom upholstering, Frank Borowitz learned
the upholsterer’s art at the age of twelve in his native land, and has operated
Frank’s Upholstery Company in Alhambra for twenty years. Originally at 703 West Main Street, in 1946
he built his present store at 716 South Marengo.
Mr.
Borowitz was born on June 3, 1898, in a part of Austria which is now
Yugoslavia, the son of the late Frank Borowitz and Katherine (Winmuller) Borowitz, who were
also Austrians. Mr. Borowitz attended
elementary school, as far as the fifth grade, in Austria; he came to the United
States in 1920, to Chicago, and in 1923 came to California and worked for the
United Studios in Hollywood, also as an
upholsterer, until 1927. For the next
fourteen years Mr. Borowitz was with Bullock’s Department Store in the
upholstery department and as an outside estimator, except for a two and one
half year period in 1932-35, during which he was in business for himself. Established in Alhambra since 1941, Frank’s
Upholstery Company is the second oldest in that area, and employs one person
besides Mr. Borowitz and his wife.
In
Los Angeles at St. Mary’s Church, on April 10, 1926, the former Miss Theresa Gattl, a native of the same town as her husband, became
Mrs. Frank Borowitz. She had come to
this country with her parents when she was eighteen months old. Mr. and Mrs. Borowitz attend All Souls
Catholic Church in Alhambra. They are
the parents of a son and daughter. Frank
Wendell, attended Fremont School and Alhambra High
School. He graduated from the University
of Southern California, and is now a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police
Department. He lives in San Gabriel with
his wife, the former Miss Wanda Yvonne Heglin, and
their two small children, Steven Charles and Karen Ann. Mrs. Charles R. (Ann Marie Borowitz) Franzen is a graduate
of Alhambra High School, and the mother of three children: Richard Charles, who attends St. Thomas More
School, Susan Lee, and Debra Ann. Her
husband is with the San Gabriel Fire Department.
Frank
Borowitz loves the mountains, which remind of him of the home of his youth, and
has a house at Lake Gregory. His hobbies
are woodcarving, furniture refinishing, and gardening. He plans to retire in the near future and spend
more time in his beloved mountains.
