WILLIAM GILMORE BEYMER

 

 

            William Gilmore Beymer, author, was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, August 14, 1881; son of Hervey Winthrop and Mary H. (Nixon) Beymer.

     His education was received in the public schools of Allegheny and Parnassus, Pennsylvania; then Chambersburg (Pennsylvania) Academy, 1897-98, Stanford University, 1903-05, and New York School of Art (William M. Chase School), 1905-07.

     As an artist, Mr. Beymer exhibited at the National Academy of Design at Kensington Garden, London, England, 1906-07; then from 1909 to 1911 he was staff writer, especially of Civil War articles and period fiction, for Harper's magazine; lecturer on short story and scenario writing at University of California Extension Division, Los Angeles, 1920 to 1925; city editor of Los Angeles Bureau of Associated Press in 1928; technical advisor for America historic and period pictures to major motion picture studies, 1933 to 1942; instructor at Army Air Force Technical Training School (civilian contract school) in 1943, and at Lockheed P-38 assembly line, 1943-44.

     Mr. Beymer is the author of “On Hazardous Service,” 1912; “12:20 P.M.,” serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, 1944; “The Middle of Midnight” (novel), 1947; “Government issued overseas edition for the Armed Forces”; and has been a contributor of Civil War fiction and general fiction to nationally known magazines for many years.

     He is a Presbyterian; Republican; and member of the Authors Club of Hollywood, California.

     Mr. Beymer married Jean M. Hayward on June 18, 1907, and they have two daughters, Jean Gilmore (wife of Lieutenant Commander George Cook, U.S.N.R.) and Marybel (Mrs. Malcolm Hall).
