EDGAR BARUCH

Important business interests claimed the attention and profited by the enterprise and keen discernment of Edgar Baruch, who was a successful manufacturer and one of the leading merchants of Los Angeles.  Mr. Baruch was born in Downey, Los Angeles county, October 20, 1879, a son of Jacob and Jeannette Baruch, and supplemented his public school education by attendance at the University of California, which awarded him the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1901 and the Master’s degree in the following year.  Liberally endowed with energy, determination and that quality which has been aptly termed the “commercial sense,” he soon gained prominence in business affairs as president of the Sacramento Valley Sugar Company, manufacturers of beet sugar, and secured a wide market for the product of the firm, which prospered by reason of his judicious management and intimate knowledge of every phase of that industry.  He was financially interested in Haas, Baruch & Co., wholesale grocery firm, one of the largest concerns of the kinds in Los Angeles.  His business associates esteemed him as a man of mature judgment and strict honesty, and as a citizen he was progressive and public-spirited.  Loyal to the ties of home and friendship and true to every relation of life, Mr. Baruch enjoyed the unqualified respect and confidence of all who knew him and his death on July 14, 1931, occasioned deep and widespread regret.

In his domestic life Mr. Baruch was most fortunately and happily situated.  On the 1st of March, 1914, he was married to Miss Paloma Schramm, a daughter of Carl and Helena (Piening) Schramm, of Los Angeles.  Both parents were natives of Germany.  The father, a noted inventor and electrical engineer, emigrated to the United States in 1882, locating in New York, where he followed the profession of an electrical engineer for a short time.  Crossing the continent, he settled in San Francisco, California, where he spent six years, and in 1888 removed with his family to Los Angeles.  By her marriage his daughter, Mrs. Baruch, became the mother of three children:  Dora, who was born July 1, 1915; Richard Edgar, born December 17, 1917; and William Jack, born October 11, 1921.  They are natives of Los Angeles and pupils in the city schools.  To lovers of music Mrs. Baruch is known as a distinguished pianist who has played before the crowned heads of Europe and in the principal cities of the world.  With her children she recrossed the Atlantic in the summer of 1932, spending the months of July and August abroad, and is at present studying in Paris with her daughter, and the two boys are in school in Switzerland.  Her professional work has brought her a wide acquaintance and she numbers among her friends personages of note.  Mrs. Bruch resides at 1222 South Van Ness avenue and occupies a place of leadership in social circles of Los Angeles.
