LILBURN SWISHER BARKSDALE

 

 

     Lilburn Swisher Barksdale, president of Barksdale Valves and of Barksdale Manufacturing Corporation, was born  December 4, 1908, in Hugo, Colorado; son of Elisha and Lillian (Swisher) Barksdale.

     Received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State A. & M. in 1932 and did construction work until 1934.

     Mr. Barksdale was job engineer for Standard Oil Company at El Segundo from 1934 to 1937; project engineer for Lane-Wells Company, Los Angeles, from 1937 to 1940; one of 117 men selected throughout the United States for a concentrated aeronautical engineering course at California Institute of Technology for supervisory personnel; design engineer for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation;(sic) Burbank, from 1940 to 1941; chief designer for Adel Precision Products Corporation, Burbank, from 1941 to 1944; consulting and development engineer operating his own office at Glendale, California, from 1944 to 1945.

     In 1945, Mr. Barksdale became a partner of Saval Co., and on its incorporation in 1946 became president and general manager of Saval Inc.  He also became vice president and director of Sanford & Company, Inc., Los Angeles, in 1946, which positions he still holds.  When Saval Inc. was sold to William R. Whittaker Co. Ltd. In 1950, Mr Barksdale became vice president and director of that firm in charge of the Saval Division, from which position he resigned in 1951 to devote full time to his own interests.  He formed Barksdale Valves in December of 1949 and Barksdale Manufacturing Corporation in 1952.  He is also sole proprietor of the Barksdale Company, also formed in 1952.

     Mr. Barksdale holds membership in the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences; Society of Automotive Engineers; Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Tau and Alpha Tau Omega fraternities, American ordnance Association and the Doctors' Club, American Petroleum Institute.

     Married Anne K. Breher June 28, 1933; four children:  Tamara, Brent, Susan and Rhonda.
