NELSON J. BALDO

Identified with the Knights of Columbus for many years, Nelson J. Baldo has served as Chancellor and is now the Grand Knight of the Alhambra Council No. 2431.

Born on April 3, 1925, in Buffalo, New York, Mr. Baldo is the son of Joseph and Grace Terrana Baldo.  He attended Public School No. 12, in Buffalo, New York, from which he was graduated in 1939.  Soon after his graduation his family traveled to California, where he attended James A. Garfield High School in East Los Angeles.  He received his high school diploma in 1943, and in the fall of this year, Mr. Baldo matriculated at Redlands University in Redlands, California, where he studied for two years taking a pre-medical course.

In World War II, Mr. Baldo served with the United States Army for two years, 18 months of which was spent in the Hawaiian Islands where he was stationed.  He was honorably discharged as a Mess Sergeant in 1943.

Following his return to civilian life, Mr. Baldo ventured into the business world, a venture which was not unknown to him, since this enterprising young man had started to work, at the age of ten years, doing odd jobs after school and during summer vacations.  Mr. Baldo, his father and his brother, Robert S., formed a business partnership and organized the Golden Gate Wholesale Meat Company, which is located at 944 South Atlantic Boulevard in Los Angeles.  The gross sales for the year 1961 are four times as great as the gross sales during the first year of operation in the wholesale meat business.

A man with an excellent knowledge for business and organization, Mr. Baldo set forth on a second business venture in 1961.  He opened a drive-in restaurant, the Fire-Pit, which is located at 9574 Lower Azusa Road in Temple City, California.  The specialties of the house are chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza.

A member of St. Stephens Catholic Church in Monterey Park, Mr. Baldo is a very active member of the Holy Name Society, of which he has been a member for eight years, and has served as Secretary of this organization during 1957.  He is also a member of the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau and served one year on the board of directors.

Mr. Baldo was one of the sponsors of the Los Angeles Drive for Mutilated Children of Italy, which was held at the Montebello Stadium.  He graciously supplied some of the refreshments for this successful event.

Mr. Baldo married Miss Marie C. Albano on October 1, 1949, in Buffalo, New York.  They have one daughter, Donna Marie, aged 10, who is a student at St. Stephens Parochial School in Monterey Park; and a son, Joseph Anthony, aged 5, who is in kindergarten at the Hillcrest Elementary School in Monterey Park.

Mrs. Baldo is active in the Parent-Teachers’ Association, the St. Stephens Women’s Council and the Italian Women’s Juniors of Los Angeles, in addition to raising the children.

For diversion and relaxation, Mr. Baldo enjoys bowling and gardening when time permits.
