GEORGE W. C. BAKER

 

George W. C. Baker figures prominently in public affairs as chairman of the finance committee and chairman of the budget committee of the city council of Los Angeles, as chairman of the fifty-second assembly republican county committee and as chairman of the mayors’ and councilmen’s section of the California League of Municipalities. Mr. Baker was born in San Francisco, California, September 28, 1872. His father, Conrad Baker, was identified with the mining industry of California for many years. The mother, Mrs. Angela (Ingargiola) Baker, was a pioneer of the Golden state who for years was interested in philanthropic work in San Francisco.

George W. C. Baker studied law four years in the office of Frank & Eisner of San Francisco, specializing in street and road improvement laws. He was formerly president of the East side Organization of Los Angeles and is now making a splendid record as councilman of the city. He was for years a member of the industrial and manufacturing committee of the Chamber of Commerce. He is a Native Son of the State of California, being a member of Ramona Parlor, and is likewise affiliated with the Sons of Italy in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Club, the East Los Angeles Kiwanis Club, the City Employes Masonic Club and many other fraternal organizations.

On the 6th of September, 1921, Mr. Baker married Miss Lura Cassingham, of San Jose, California. By a former marriage he has one daughter and three sons, namely: Conrad Baker, manager of the dried fruit department of the Richmond Chase Canning Company of San Jose; Addison M. Baker and Edwin L. Baker of Los Angeles. Conrad and Addison Baker are World war veterans, having served overseas. The daughter, Carrie E., is now Mrs. A. T. Mahar.
