CHARLES
HENRY BAAD
Charles Henry Baad, managing director of Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel, was born in Coschocton County, Ohio, on December 29, 1876, the son of Christian and Mary Baad. He moved with his parents at the age of five to Kendallville, Indiana, where he received his education in the public schools.
Mr. Baad began his business career at the age of twenty as a Morse telegraph operator. In 1896 he was assigned to President McKinley’s campaign which was conducted from Canton, Ohio. While stopping at the Barnett House he became acquainted with Frank Schnell, the manager, who induced him to enter the hotel business and gave him an interest in the Barnett House. He was subsequently connected in various capacities with the South European Hotel (Columbus, Ohio), Grunewald and St. Charles Hotels (New Orleans, Louisiana), and Victoria Hotel (Chicago, Illinois). Mr. Baad moved to California in 1911 and became employed by the St. Francis Hotel at San Francisco where he arose to the position of assistant manager. He left San Francisco in 1920 to take over the managership of the Alexandria Hotel in Los Angeles, which position he retained until 1922 when he resigned to become manager of the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel, working with New York architects on its construction and has been with that hotel ever since, where he is now managing director.
Mr. Baad was active in the civic, business and social life of Los Angeles but owing to a serious illness a few years ago he has been forced to curtail all activity outside of his hotel duties. He is a member of the Elks, Masons (Shriner); Family Club of San Francisco and the Wilshire Country Club of Los Angeles.
Mr. Baad married Eleanor Hansen of Philadelphia in 1903 (deceased, 1939). There were no children.
