MARY M.
ASHTON
Prominently connected with the Long
Beach branch of the Southwestern University of Los Angeles as registrar of the
School of Law, Mary M. Ashton has occupied this responsible position for a year
and had previously won success n the educational field. She was born in Dallas county [sic],
Missouri, a daughter of
G. B. and
Josephine Mack, the latter a native of the same state. The father was born in Illinois and became a
prominent figure in educational circles of Missouri where he also had
agricultural interests. Both he and the
mother are deceased, and of their ten children, seven are now living.
Reared in her native state, Mary M.
Ashton supplemented her high school education by attendance at the Springfield
Normal School and following her graduation became a teacher. She was an instructor in several business
colleges, readily and accurately imparting to others the knowledge that she had
acquired. The year 1918 witnessed her arrival
in Los Angeles, where she remained until 1931, and has since been associated
with the Long Beach Branch of Southwestern University, efficiently discharging
the duties of registrar. To this work
she gives her best efforts and under her capable direction the school is
rapidly growing in size and in importance.
Mrs. Ashton has an attractive
personality and appears nearly as young as her son, Robert R. Ashton, of whom
she is justly proud. Well proportioned,
he is over six feet tall, and both physically and mentally has been well
endowed. He was educated in Los Angeles,
graduating at Polytechnic high [sic] school [sic]. In his senior year at Southwestern University
he won prizes in all subjects for highest scholarship and in 1931 was graduated
cum laude from that institution, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Laws. Admitted to the bar of California in August,
1931, he is now practicing law in Los Angeles, with offices on the third floor
of the Western Pacific building. He
belongs to Phi Delta, a legal fraternity, of which he is a past supreme ruler.
