GLEN ELVEN ARBOGAST
Glen Elven Arbogast, chairman of the Board, Newbery Electric Corporation, was born August 31, 1884, in Numa, Iowa; the son of Stephen A. Douglas and Katherine Matilda (Gammon) Arbogast.
Graduate of high school, Centerville, Iowa; then attended Iowan Wesleyan University (Mt. Pleasant), and Iowa State Normal School. Mr. Arbogast became associated with F. E. Newbery Electric Company, Los Angeles, California in 1903; became superintendent of construction in 1907, and general manager in 1910. In 1921 he purchased F. E. Newbery’s interest, and reorganized the company under the name of Newbery Electric Corporation, of which he became president and principal stockholder. In 1949 he resigned as president when appointed chairman of the Board. He is also chairman of the Board of Newbery Electric Corporation of Arizona.
Mr. Arbogast has served as vice president of Interstate Securities Corporation since 1936; president and director of National Electrical Contractors’ Association Los Angeles Chapter various times since 1910; president of Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce 1923-27 (now president emeritus); member, Board of Directors, and chairman of Southern Division of Pacific Coast Electrical Association 1917-1939;director of Construction Industries Exposition and Home Show, Inc., of Southern California since 1946; director of Downtown Business Men’s Association, Los Angeles since 1924; director of Central Business District Association, Los Angeles since 1945; chairman of advisory board, Eagle Rock Branch, Bank of America 1925-1941; vice president of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners 1933-1936; president 1936-1940; president of California Port Association 1937-1940 (now president emeritus); president of Pacific Coast Port Association 1939-1940; chairman of advisory board, Exceptional Children’s Foundation, Inc. 1949-1951; president 1947-1949; president of California Safety Council 1949-1950; president of Construction Employers Council of Southern California 1950-51; member advisory board Y.M.C.A., Eagle Rock, California since 1949.
Member Westlake Lodge 392, F.& A.M., Los Angeles, Scottish Rite, Los Angeles Consistory (life), Al Malaikah Temple, and 32nd A.A.N.O.M.S.; Seniors Golf Association of Southern California (governor 1948-1952; secretary-treasurer 1951-1952); member, American Society of Mental Deficiency; member Southern California Industrial Committee of California State Chamber of Commerce; Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce (member of executive committee 1925-1952); Employers’ Council of Southern California (president 1951-1952); Welfare Federation of Los Angeles (member board of directors 1948-1952); United Church at Eagle Rock (Congregationalist-Methodist) (chairman of Finance Committee 1923-1929); member of the following clubs: Los Angeles Athletic, Annandale Golf (president 1952-1953); Propeller, and Hollywood Executives.
Mr. Arbogast is a Democrat; his hobby is civic and welfare activities.
Married on May 15, 1908, at Los Angeles, California, to Emerald Lucy Barman. Children: Wanda Emerald (Mrs. Carlisle Bailey) born 1909; Juanita Lucy (Mrs. J. H. Hitch) born 1910; Richard Elven born 1912, Woodrow Wilson born 1917, Dorothy May (Mrs. Ralph Blum) born 1919, and Grant Eugene born 1924.
