RUSSELL
G. ANDERSON
Many
people are appalled at the present juvenile delinquency statistics; Russell G.
Anderson and his wife are doing as much as two people can to prevent juvenile delinquency. They have opened their home to Los Angeles
County foster children, and have had close to thirty youngsters over the years.
Employed
by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office since 1947, Mr. Anderson worked for
six years in the juvenile department, and in 1947 helped to open the Biscailuz Center, a facility for keeping juveniles prior to
formal hearing, the first of its type in any sheriff’s department in the
country. From 1953 until the present, he
has been assigned to the civil division of the sheriff’s department, working
out of the Los Angeles County Court House.
His main concern with youth now is in church work. For three years he was ruling elder of the
First Presbyterian Church of Alhambra for youth activities, and helped to
establish the Easter work projects which have been held annually for five
years. He also teaches college Sunday
school classes.
Born
in Greenleaf, Kansas, on February 11, 1923, Mr. Anderson is the son of Lawrence
E. and Carolyn (Adams) Anderson, both natives of Kansas. His paternal grandmother was one of the first
white children born in Kansas; her parents were from England. Russell Anderson received his elementary
education in Kansas, and graduated from Greenleaf High School there in 1939,
after which he was engaged in farming in that state for three years.
From
1942 until 1946 Mr. Anderson was in the United States Navy as a motor machinist
first class. He spent two years overseas
and took part in the invasion of France.
After
his discharge from the Navy Mr. Anderson went to California and worked for
Sears, Roebuck and Company for one year before becoming attached to the Los
Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
Mr.
Anderson is a member of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Alhambra and
is presently chairman of a swimming team committee.
In
Montebello, on February 14, 1946, Mr. Russell Anderson married the former Miss
Patricia Cousins of Kansas. She is one
of the fifty women who this year have helped to
supervise school playgrounds at noon.
She is a past Cub Scout den mother, and is presently a Brownie
leader. Active in the Granada School
Parent-Teachers’ Association, Mrs. Anderson is its auditor and safety
chairman. As a member of the school’s
safety committee, she sits in on the safety, health and education committee
meetings of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce.
Also active in church work, Mrs. Anderson teaches first grade Sunday
school. The Anderson’s are the parents
of two children, Mark E. and Sandra Kay, who both attend Granada School. Mark is on the varsity football and baseball
teams and is a member of the Young Men’s Christian Association swimming
team. He plays the piano, having studied
for eight years. Sandra Kay studies tap
and ballet dancing and also swims at the Young Men’s Christian Association.
In
his spare time on weekends and some evenings, Mr. Anderson is a real estate
salesman for Homer O. Genoway in Alhambra. A past Cub Scout leader, Russell Anderson
finds enjoyment in family activities and youth work. His hobby is woodworking.
