RANDOLPH (RANDY) ANDREWS
Randolph
N. Andrews has studied voice and piano in this country and Europe, has had
considerable professional musical experience, and has been teaching piano and voice
in Alhambra since 1936. He now also has
a studio in San Marino. At both studios
Mr. Andrews gives individual instruction to children and adults.
Mr.
Andrews was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 29, 1907. His father, George R. Andrews, who is now
deceased, was born in Pueblo, Colorado, and had an insurance firm, Andrews,
Incorporated. His mother, Mabel
(Crandall) Andrews, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Her grandfather Crandall donated a large
amount of land to Glen’s Falls, New York. The Andrews family moved to Alhambra in 1927
where Mrs. Andrews was very active in Red Cross work; she also wrote for the
San Marino Tribune as columnist for many years.
Due to his father’s extensive traveling, setting up insurance branches,
“Randy” Andrews attended a number of schools, graduating in 1928 from Alhambra
High School where he sang lead roles in the senior operas. He attended the University of Southern
California, majoring in voice and minoring in piano; in 1938 he received his
Bachelor of Arts degree at the Paris Conservatory of Music. While in college Mr. Andrews sang on most of
the local radio stations; at KFI he was the staff tenor for three years; he had
his own program on NBC and locally. No
relation to the Andrews Sisters, he worked with them when they first
started. He has also done motion picture
work.
From
1942 to 1945 Mr. Andrews served with the United States Army as a sergeant in
the engineering, transportation, and special services corps.
Mr.
Andrews joined the Valley Portal Kiwanis Club over twenty-five years ago when
it was known as the El Sereno Kiwanis Club; he is a past member of its board of
directors.
Married
to the former Miss Martha Jane Ellis of Pittsburgh, Kansas, in Pomona,
California, Mr. Andrews is the father of two children, Mrs. Andrews’ son by a
former marriage, Glenn Colton, and a daughter, Melody Claire, both students at
Emery Park School in Alhambra.
Mr.
Andrews has a fine collection of classical records; he also collects old
vintage automobiles. Boats are his
special love. He turned the boat he had
in 1941 over to the Coast Guard and it was used for patrol duty in the Long
Beach area; since that time he has had many boats.
