WILLIAM
HERBERT ALLEN
William Herbert Allen, president of Title Insurance and Trust Company of Los Angeles, is the son of William Herbert and Elsie (Pettijohn) Allen. He was born on October 1, 1895 in Pasadena, California. Mr. Allen, Sr. (deceased 1943) was president of Title Insurance and Trust Company from 1893 to 1935 and chairman of the Board from 1935 to 1943.
He attended the public schools of Los Angeles, The Thacher School, and is a graduate of Harvard College (Class of ‘18).
In 1920 Mr. Allen joined his father in business with the Title Insurance and Trust Company, Los Angeles, California, as a clerk in the Trust Department; two years later he was named vice president and director; he was made treasurer in 1932, executive vice president in 1946, and president in 1952.
Mr. Allen is vice chairman of the Title Insurance Section of the American Title Association; member of the Executive Committee and also past president of the California Land Title Association; director of Merchants and Manufacturers Association of Los Angeles; trustee of Hollenbeck Home for the Aged, the Thacher School, and Circle X Ranch Foundation; associate member of California Institute Associates; director and treasurer of the Pasadena Tuberculosis Association; member of Board of Governors of Town Hall; member and past president of Los Angeles Exchange Club; director and past president of Harvard Club of Southern California; director of All-Year Club of Southern California, Ltd.
His sports include tennis, golf, skiing, and sailing; he is a member of the California Club, the Annandale Country Club, and the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
In May of 1925 Mr. Allen married Eleanor Bush of New York, who is the daughter of Irving T.(president and later chairman of the Board of Bush Terminal Company of New York) and Belle (Barlow) Bush. Mrs. Allen attended the old Los Robles School in Pasadena and private schools in Boston, Massachusetts.
Mr. And Mrs. Allen are the parents of three children; Joan Sutherland (Mrs. Deane Funk of Santa Monica), who was educated in Branson School and Stanford University; Priscilla Standish (Mrs. Robert H. Cowgill of Pasadena); and William Herbert, Jr. (sophomore at Stanford University).
