He was born in Canton, Ohio, October 5, 1885, his parents being George and Mary Margaret (Berg) Markling, the latter also a native of Canton, Ohio, where they were married. George Markling was a carriage trimmer by trade and a Catholic in religious faith. He passed away in 1894 at Canton, being long survived by his wife, whose death occurred there in 1907. Their family numbered five children.

Thereafter he worked for the Bonnot Company of Canton for a period of ten years, from 1903 until 1913, and then came west to the Pacific coast, taking up his abode at Brawley, in the Imperial Valley of California. Here he devoted his attention to ranching activities for some time. In the year 1930 he was appointed city treasurer of Brawley, to fill a vacancy, in which office he has continued to the present time, his service being characterized by the utmost efficiency and fidelity.

In 1923 Mr. Markling was united in marriage to Clara M. Kirchgessner, of Cambridge, Ohio, and they are the parents of three children, James Cyril, Betty Ann and William Paul, who are nine, eight and seven years of age, respectively.

Fraternally Mr. Markling is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks and with the Knights of Columbus and in religious faith is a Roman Catholic, being a member of Sacred Heart parish. Tennis is his favorite sport. He is highly respected in Brawley and enjoys deserved popularity in civic, fraternal and social circles of the community.
