JOHN W. ALBERY
This well known resident of Glenn
County is one of the worthy citizens that the Buckeye state has furnished to
California, for he was born in Franklin County, Ohio, on the 16th of
May, 1850. His boyhood days were spent
on a farm, where he early formed habits of industry and economy that have
proven of great benefit to him in his business career. To the public school system is he indebted
for the educational privileges which he received. On attaining his majority he began working at
the trade of carpenter, which he followed for one year, when, at the age of
twenty-two years, he emigrated to Marion County, Iowa,
there spending the succeeding seven years of his life. In August, 1877, he started for the Pacific
coast and four days later arrived in Colusa County, now Glenn County. He was one of the first carpenters at this
place and a year after his arrival he turned his attention to the hotel
business, forming a partnership with his brother Morgan. That relationship was maintained for seven
years, when the partnership was dissolved and the brother removed to Shasta
County, California. In 1892 Mr. Albery,
of this review, was placed in charge of the draw-bridge at Butte City, and in
1897 was appointed supervisor to fill out an unexpired term. The following year he was
elected to that office, so that he is the present incumbent. He has also been a justice of the peace at
Butte City, and for twelve years was a notary public.
Mr. Albery exercises his right of
franchise in support of the men and measures of the Democratic Party, and his
first vote was cast for Samuel J. Tilden.
He has since been identified with the Democracy and is deeply interested
in its success and upbuilding. For four
years he has been a member of the Independent Order of Foresters. He is recognized as one of the leading
citizens of Glenn County, honorable in business, faithful in friendship, and
ever true to the duties of public life.
