CHARLES F. WOOD
As sheriff of El Dorado County,
Charles F. Wood has made a most creditable record during the eight years he has
now served in this office. In every
assignment which has fallen to him he has performed his duties with distinction
and courage, and has done much to insure and promote the safety of the citizens
of the county. Charles F. Wood was born
in Atlanta, Georgia, November 26, 1867, a son of James E. and Martha E. (Deadman) Wood.
Previous to the above date, James E. Wood had been to California, where
he was very successfully engaged in mining at Georgia Slide. He returned to Georgia after his strike, and
in that state engaged in mercantile business and in farming.
Charles F. Wood attended the public
schools of Atlanta, Georgia, also Moors Business College, then was employed in
connection with railroad and bridge construction until 1891. Having had from his father much information
concerning the beauties and the opportunities of the California mining country,
he determined to seek his fortune here and accordingly came west in the month
of February, 1891. Mr. Wood became a
well known and popular citizen of this community, and eight years ago was
elected sheriff of El Dorado County, which office he has filled continuously
since, in a most capable manner. He also
engages in fruit growing in addition to his official duties. He is a member of the Benevolent Protective
Order of Elks, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Fraternal Order of
Eagles. He also finds great enjoyment in
the prevailing sports of this region, -- hunting and fishing.
Charles F. Wood was married to Miss
Doris Zeisz, who was born at Placerville, a member of
one of the pioneer families of this locality.
They are the parents of a son, Charles E., who is a civil engineer in
the state of Washington.
