Biographies
CHARLES E. MARSH
The
ability and efficiency of Charles E. Marsh as a public officer is most strongly
indicated by the number of years he has occupied official position in El Dorado
County. Now serving as county recorder
at Placerville, Mr. Marsh has been in office continuously since the year 1906,
and is generally reputed to be one of the most competent county officials in
the state of California. Mr. Marsh was
born at Placerville, June 28, 1866, a son of Jason Cooper and Cynthia Ann
(Gilham) Marsh. The parents were true
pioneers of California, having crossed the plains in 1852 and settled in El
Dorado County. Like all the emigrants of
those days, the father first engaged in mining, then, as the population grew,
he followed other pursuits. Both Jason
C. Marsh and his wife are now deceased.
Charles
E. Marsh received his education in the public schools of Placerville, and early
in life was apprenticed to the blacksmith trade. He engaged in this occupation only for two
years, then accepted employment in a local grocery store, where he remained
until 1906, when he was elected county recorder. In this position he has since remained
continuously, with the exception of four years, when he was a deputy in the
recorder’s office. Mr. Marsh has always
given his support to the Republican Party, and is a past president of the
Placerville Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West.
Mr.
Marsh was married to Miss Katherine Gafney, who is also a native of California,
and a descendant of a pioneer family.
Mr. and Mrs. Marsh are the parents of five children: Clyde, Lloyd, Hazel, Maude, and Lois. They also have seven grandchildren. Sojourning among the beautiful hills and
mountains near his home forms the principal diversion of Mr. Marsh when the
opportunity occurs to leave his many official duties.
