JOSEPH C. BEACH

Joseph C. Beach, who is descended from one of the pioneer families of El Dorado County, is the proprietor of the S. D. Beach Company, which operates an extensive box factory, sawmill, and lumber yard at Placerville, being now the managing head of the large business interests which were established by his father.  As a citizen he takes a keen interest in all affairs which he deems of benefit to his community, and is one who enjoys a high degree of personal popularity.     Joseph C. Beach was born in Placerville, July 7, 1883, a son of S. D. and Lelia (Taylor) Beach.  The father, a native of New York State, was twenty-one years of age when he came to El Dorado County.  He first engaged in mining at Smithflat, and after three years built a small planing mill, which was the start of his subsequent extensive business, known as one of the most important of its kind in northern California.  He was a great civic worker and leader, and was very active in the Chamber of Commerce.  He also served on the city board of trustees.  His death occurred in December, 1927.  His wife crossed the plains with her parents in the early days, and here lived until March 23, 1928.  S. D. and Lelia Beach are the parents of five children.

Joseph C. Beach was educated in the grade and high schools of Placerville, then entered business in the employ of his father.  For twelve years he operated the box factory and planing mill for the Michigan California Lumber Company but at the time of his father’s death, he took over the management of the latter’s business interests, and is now conducting the same with much credit to himself.  The S. D. Beach Company owns a lumber yard, box factory, and planing mill, carries every line of building material, and during the busy season employs about fifty people.

Mr. Beach is a Republican, and a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Lions Club of Placerville.  He was married to Miss Mary Purcell, who was born in El Dorado County, and they are the parents of five children, namely:  Thelma, Adela, Set, Billy, and Stanley.
