THE VETERANS' HOME OF CALIFORNIA.
Headquarters: (Business
office of Board of Directors, Secretary, Treasurer, and active committees on
duty daily), 320 Sansome street, San Francisco.
Location of Veterans' Home, Napa County
(railroad station, Yountville, 55 miles north of San Francisco, on the San
Francisco, Napa, and Calistoga branch of the S.P.R.R.).
The Veterans' Home, heretofore
owned and managed by the Veterans' Home Association, a corporation formed by
the Grand Army of the Republic, and the Associated Veterans of the Mexican War,
to care for worthy soldiers, sailors, and marines, survivors of the War with
Mexico and the Civil War, and upon which it had expended over $300,000 in the
purchase of its 910 acres of land, construction, furnishing, and fittings of
some forty five buildings, its many permanent improvements, etc., having been
presented as a free gift to the people of California by such Association,
acting for said two patriotic organizations, was assumed control of by the
State, as a State institution.

per month.
The membership of the Veterans'
Home May 1, 1903, was 860.
The Veterans' Home is supported by appropriations
from the State and from the United States (the latter being by Act of Congress
approved August 27, 1888, and known as the "State Aid Act"), as
follows:
State appropriation,
$55,000 per annum.
United States appropriation, $100 per
capita for every veteran actually present and cared for in the Home.
