ARTHUR W. WELDIN

ARTHUR W. WELDIN.--An enterprising merchant and postmaster at Nord, who has been a resident of Butte County since September 5, 1890, is Arthur W. Weldin, who was born at Minerva, Stark County, Ohio, August 26, 1867.  His father, Z. A. Weldin, was also a native of that state and served in an Ohio regiment in the Civil War.  After the war he followed the profession of photographer in Stark Count until 1878, when he removed with his family to Kearney, Buffalo County, Neb., where he homesteaded one hundred sixty acres of land at the head of Buckeye Valley, making the necessary improvements.  He continued as an agriculturist until his boys were all grown, when he sold his farm and removed to Kearney and established a studio, which occupied his time until his death, December 28, 1917.

The mother of Arthur W. Weldin bore the maiden name of Sarah Jane Stackhouse, and she was also a native of Stark County, Ohio, where she married the elder Weldin.  She still makes her home in Kearney.  The father and mother both made trips to California to visit our subject, and were most favorably impressed with the land of gold and sunshine.  Of their seven children, all of who are living, Arthur W. is the second oldest.  He and his bother James, a farmer at Durham, are the only ones in California.  Arthur W. Weldin, when ten years of age, removed with his parents to Buffalo County, Neb., where he completed the course in the public schools, assisting his father on the farm until twenty-one years of age.  In 1889 he migrated westward going to Eastern Oregon, where he was employed in the lumber woods until 1890, when he came to Butte County, entering the employ of the Sierra Lumber Company and working up to foreman of the mill at West Branch.  This place he filled acceptably until the Sierra Lumber Company’s holdings were sold to the Diamond Match Company, in the spring of 1907.  Continuing in the employ of the Diamond Match Company, he was transferred to Lyonsville as mill foreman.  Here he was satisfactorily engaged for a period of three years, when he resigned to accept a similar position with the Standard Lumber Company at Sonora, Tuolumne County, where he remained for another three years, when he resigned and returned to Butte County.

In November, 1913, he purchased the store of W. K. Keep at Nord, and has since then engaged in the general mercantile business, meeting with good success and carrying a line of goods suitable for a country district.  In November, 1913, he was also appointed postmaster at Nord, where he has filled the position ably and well ever since.

Mrs. Weldin was in maidenhood Ellene Tyler, a native daughter of Butte County, who was a graduate of the Chico State Normal and was engaged in teaching until a year before her marriage, when she was bookkeeper for the Chico Ice and Cold Storage Company.  By a former marriage Mrs. Weldin has three children: Lauren A., Alma, and Walter.

Mr. Weldin is serving as deputy sheriff under Sheriff Riddle.  Fraternally he is a member of Chico Lodge, No. 113, I. O. O. F., and is also a member of the Encampment and Canton of Odd Fellows, and of Great Oak Camp, No. 136, Woodmen of the World.  In 1897, Mr. Weldin made a trip back to his home in Nebraska, visiting his parents and old friends.  On returning to California he appreciated his adopted state more than ever.  He has built and owns a residence in Thatcher Addition, Chico.  He is meeting with success in business and is commended as a public officer.
