FRED E. WALKER

FRED E. WALKER.—Merchant and postmaster at Nimshew, Butte County, Fred E. Walker is also engaged in farming and stock-raising.  He is a native son of California, born near Stockton, San Joaquin County, November 27, 1868.  His father, J. A. Walker, a pioneer of California, is represented on another page in this work.  Fred E. was reared in Butte County, receiving his education in the public schools, and in Woodman’s Academy in Chico.  After graduating from the Academy, he assisted his father in his contracting and building business in Chico.  He was thus busily engaged until 1895, when he located at Nimshew, being employed with his brother, Barton E. Walker, the merchant, at the above place.  About 1902, Fred E. purchased his brother’s ranch and general merchandise establishment and continued the business.  Being thoroughly familiar with it, he has carried it on successfully, as well as engaging in farming and stock-raising on his one-hundred-twelve-acre ranch.  Interested in horticulture, he set out fifteen acres to an apple orchard that is now in full bearing.  For the past thirteen years he has held the commission as postmaster at Nimshew, a place he has filled satisfactorily to all concerned.

Mr. Walker is also interested in mining, with A. H. and Ralph Rugh, and they have leased and have a bond on the old Emma Mine at Nimshew.  They are operating with a tunnel and drifting, and are meeting with an excellent showing.

Mr. Walker was married in Chico, being united with Miss Elizabeth London, a native of Pentz, Butte County.  A son has blessed their union, Clive Arden, a graduate of Chico High, after which he attended the University of California until he enlisted in the United States Army.  He holds a commission as sergeant in the Aviation Section, now serving over seas.

Fraternally Mr. Walker is a member of Chico Lodge of Odd Fellows.  An enterprising and public-spirited citizen, he is a supporter of all progressive movements.  For the past eight years he has been a member and clerk of the board of trustees of the Nimshew district.
