WILLIAM D. WALKER
W. D. WALKER.—A man of exemplary
character and high ideals, who believes in applying to the every-day conduct of
his business affairs the moral precepts he stands for as an active member of
the church, is W. D. Walker, the proprietor of a well-kept billiard parlor,
now the popular headquarters for young men of the best circles. He was born in
Lancaster, Wis., June 5, 1874, the son of George T. Walker, a
native of Watertown, N. Y., and a veteran of the Civil War. After residing
for some time in the Middle West, George Walker returned to New York State and
died there. Mrs. Walker, who was Mary Susan Bennett before her marriage, was a
native of England and came to Wisconsin with her parents. When she died, in
Oklahoma, she was the mother of nine children.
The fifth eldest of these, W. D. Walker,
attended school at St. Joseph, Mo., enjoying both the grammar and high
school courses. He then entered the employ of an oil company in St. Louis,
and, in 1907, first came to California, almost immediately choosing Chico as
his place of residence. He then also started his present business, and when the
Waterland and Breslauer
Building was completed he established his parlor there. He has six tables for
parlor billiards, is an experienced tobacconist and carries a large and varied
stock, and is an active member of the Business Men’s Association. In national
politics he is a Republican.
In St. Joseph, Mo., Mr. Walker was married
to Miss Maude Holloway, a native of Albany, Mo., and a daughter of the late
Captain James S. and Nancy Holloway, natives of Missouri.
Mr. Holloway enlisted in the Federal army in a Missouri regiment and rose
from a private to the rank of Captain during his service of over four years. He
was several times wounded in battle, but each time returned to his company after
recovery. After the war he was in business in Albany, Mo., finally retiring to
private life and he and his wife spent their last days among old friends there.
Mr. and Mrs. Walker are the parents of two children, Mae and Elizabeth.
Mr. Walker is a member of Chico Lodge, No. 423,
B. P. O. Elks; of the Woodmen of the World, and the Knights of
the Maccabees. The family attend
the Methodist Church.
