ARTHUR FRANK VETTEL
ARTHUR FRANK VETTEL.—The transformation wrought
in California during the past forty or fifty years is due to the energy and
patient perseverance of the pioneer men and women who left comfortable homes in
the East to identify themselves with the newer West, and out of its crudity
evolved the present-day civilization. Descended from such pioneer stock is
A. Frank Vettel, a native son of the Golden
State, born in Tehama County, near the town of Vina,
on April 22, 1880. He is a son of the late William and Fannie
(Wright) Vettel, natives of Illinois and Missouri
respectively. Grandfather Vettel came to California
during the early days of gold-mining excitement, and eventually settled in
Butte County, where he died.
William Vettel
crossed the plains with his father, at that time being quite a young lad, and
made his home in Tehama County, where he became a farmer, until 1884, when he
came back to Butte County. He married Fannie Wright, of Welsh descent, who had
crossed the plains with her parents when she was a young girl, and was living
in Butte County at the time of her marriage. Mr. Vettel
was killed by the explosion of an engine on the ranch of Smith and Currie, in
1885. Of this union of Mr. and Mrs. Vettel, five
children were born: William, now living at Redding; Arthur Frank, of this
review; Ray, of Chico; Glenn, deceased; and Gerald, also a resident of Redding.
Mrs. Vettel, now Mrs. Evans, resides at Sheldon, Cal.
A. Frank Vettel
received his education in the public schools, and in 1905, at the age of
twenty-five, began farming on the forty-acre place where he now lives and which
he owns. He also leases about two hundred acres adjoining. Mr. Vettel is engaged in raising grain, cattle and hogs, in which
occupation he is meeting with success.
On July 26, 1905, Arthur Frank Vettel was united in marriage with Miss Alice Munz, born in Sterling, Ill., the daughter of John and
Marion (Thompson) Munz, who came to California, and
here farmed and conducted a dairy until the death of Mr. Munz.
The widow is living near Trinidad, Humboldt County. Mr. and Mrs. Vettel have three children: Arthur, Geraldine, and Leonard.
Mr. Vettel is a straightforward, honest, industrious
citizen, and holds the respect and esteem of all with whom he comes in contact.
He has served as trustee of Meridian school district, and has been clerk of the
board. He is a member of the Eagles, and is a Republican.
