MARTIN TUFFORD

The clerk of the board of trustees of the Stirling City schools, Martin Tufford, is a man of true worth, whose thorough capabilities and excellent business judgment were duly recognized by his fellow townsmen in his appointment to this responsible position.  He was born in Brownsville, Yuba County, on November 17, 1878.  His father, the late James Tufford, was an early settler in California, having migrated from Pennsylvania.  His mother was in maidenhood Viola Hedge, the daughter of Joseph and Nancy (Porter) Hedge, who brought her to California in 1849, when she was but one year old.  She is living now in San Francisco, and is sixty-nine years of age.  Mr. and Mrs. Hedge were pioneers of Yuba County and settled near Brownsville, where they operated a hotel in those early day of the Golden State.

Mr. and Mrs. James Tufford were blessed with five children, of whom Martin was the fourth.  He attended the public schools of Yuba County.  From the age of fourteen to sixteen he worked on farms in that county, and then decided to learn the trade of a butcher, and was employed by Henry Klos, of Brownsville.  In 1905 he removed to Chico, where he was employed by Mr. Schwein,  of the California Market, which was later purchased by the Chico Meat Company.  Martin Tufford has had experience in every department of the meat business and is regarded as an excellent cutter.  That he is thorough and efficient in his special line of work is attested by his being selected by the Chico Meat Company to manage their business at Stirling City.  He is very popular, and is building up for the company a large trade, by his close attention to business, strict integrity and genial manner.

Martin Tufford was united in marriage at Sacramento, with Miss Lizzie Twogood, the daughter of G. S. W. Twogood, who kept the toll-gate, grocery and post office at Brownsville.  They are the parents of two children, Lawrence and Mildred.  Mr. and Mrs. Tufford removed from Chico to Stirling City in 1913, when Mr. Tufford was made manager of the meat business at the latter place.  The first meat company in Stirling City was known as Spear and Snow, but in 1913 they sold their business to the Chico Meat Company.  When G. R. Snow removed to Chico, Martin Tufford was appointed in his place as a member of the board of education.  Afterwards he was elected to the position, and he is now the clerk of the board.  Mr. Tufford is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is a Past Grand of the order.  He and his wife have a large circle of friends in Stirling City.
