JACK O. SIMMS

      J. O. SIMMS.--A progressive and enterprising man, whose interest in the development of the city and county is expressed in his liberal support of any measure for this purpose, is illustrated in J. O. Simms, who first came to California, in July, 1888. He was born in Huntsville, Randolph County, Mo., February 18, 1863. His father, John T. Simms, was a native of Virginia who settled in Missouri in 1835, where he was engaged

in farming. The mother was Mary Fray, also a native of Missouri.

Jack Simms, as he is familiarly known, was the youngest in their family of four, being a very small child when his mother died. He was reared on his father's farm, and received a good education in the public schools. After his school days were over, he worked for an uncle until he came to Chico, Cal., in 1888. After his arrival in the state of California he was variously employed until 1892, since which time he has been engaged in the liquor business. His establishment is located on the corner of Third and Broadway.

Mr. Simms was married, in San Francisco, to Miss Louise Johnson, who was born in the state of Minnesota. Fraternally he is a charter member of Chico Lodge, No. 423, B. P. O. Elks. He is a Democrat in national political affairs and is a member of the Business Men's Association. Mr. Simms has always been ready to give freely of his means to aid movements for enhancing the importance of the city or the comfort of its dwellers.
