CHARLES T. SELF

CHARLES T. SELF.One of the leading cement contractors of Chico, who has been closely identified with the building business since his arrival in Butte County, Charles T. Self was born in Coos County, Ore., March 28, 1881. He was educated in the public schools of his native county and brought up to be a farmer. When a very young man he was owner of fifty-one acres of land upon which he ran a dairy four years and met with success. He sold out in 1902 and came to California. Settling in Chico, he started to learn the trade of cement worker with C. D. Shearer, and after serving four years at the business he formed an association with the Chico Construction Company, and for a number of years was their foreman. He was with the company about ten years and during this time superintended the construction of many miles of sidewalks and curbs, besides the construction of many foundations of important buildings and homes.

In 1915 he started in for himself as a cement and concrete contractor and has had his share of the building business since that time. He has specialized in waterproof basements, and has built waterproof pits for pumping plants on many of the fruit ranches. Some of the more recent jobs that he has had are: The cement work for the Chico Ice and Cold Storage Company; the Enloe Hospital oil tank; a septic tank and the cow barns on the Enloe Dairy Ranch. His work has given good satisfaction, and has been a good advertisement among his patrons.

Mr. Self was united in marriage on May 22, 1902, in Coquille, Ore., with Miss Martha Root, a native of Oregon, and they have one son, Eldred Maxwell. Mr. Self has invested in property and has a plot of two and one half acres of ground which is planted to grapes and almonds. He is ever ready to assist all worthy enterprises as far as his means will permit, and what of success and standing he enjoys in his adopted county has been strictly of his own making. With Mrs. Self, he enjoys the confidence of a wide circle of friends.
