J. RIEDEL

      J. RIEDEL. – Good workmanship and attention to details are only two of the many assets that have guaranteed the patronage of J. Riedel, proprietor of the Electric Shoe Shop in Chico. He was born between Treves and Coblenz, Rhine Providence, Germany, August 10, 1860. His father was Julius Riedel, a bridge-builder and general contractor, who died in 1866.

Mr. Riedel attended the public schools of Germany and at the age of fourteen was apprenticed as a shoemaker for three and one-half years. He followed the work of a journeyman until 1881, when he came to Chicago, Ill., and there carried the hod in the construction of buildings for about one year, and also did work as a painter. On January 1, 1888, he came to Oroville, Cal., where he stayed for three months. Mr. Riedel then came to Chico, where he worked on a farm, doing threshing, harvesting, etc. In 1890 he entered the employ of the Sierra Lumber Company, at work on the flume watching the flume-tending section. Mr. Riedel remained in that position thirteen years and was then in a lumber yard for one year. He then worked at repairing for Daly and Ash for three years. In 1904, he resigned and opened his present shoe-repairing shop, where he has a large business.

Mr. Riedel built his residence in Chico Vecino, and it was the fifth house to be erected in that locality. He was married in Marysville, Cal., to miss Matilda Cedar, born in Sweden, and they have three children: Annie B., the first child born in Chico Vecino, is now principal of the Bidwell school; Lucia V., who is Mrs. T. H. Polk of Chico; and Harry C., who assists his father in his business. Mr. Riedel is a member of Chico Lodge, No. 113, I. O. O. F., of which he is a Past Noble Grand, and he belongs to the Encampment, of which he is a Past Chief Patriarch, and he belongs also to the Canton. He is a member of the Fraternal Brotherhood. Both he and his wife are Rebekahs.
