JARED V. RICHARDSON
JARED V. RICHARDSON.--A pioneer who
will be long remembered, and who in the end was a very successful man, was
Jared V. Richardson, who first saw the light in Indianapolis
in 1838, and closed his eyes to the scenes of this world near the Pacific, on
November 28, 1912, in the seventy-fourth year of his age. He was reared on the
home farm in Indiana, and was
brought up a Hoosier schoolboy, attending the primitive public schools of his
time. When twenty-five years old, he set out across the wide plains on
horseback, one of a company of five young men, three of whom were his
brothers--Joseph H., now proprietor of Richardson Springs; Pierce C., a farmer
on the Crouch ranch; and A. W., who resides in Chico Vecino.
The
brothers engaged in ranching in Butte County,
and ran the Thomasson ranch, south of Chico,
for many years. Five brothers bought the Richardson Springs. One of them died
later, and thereafter the others continued the management in partnership. They
were stockmen, and later also engaged in farming. They owned five thousand
acres of range land, located at the Richardson Springs.
Mr.
and Mr. J. V. Richardson built the first hotel at the Springs,
and conducted it for some time. The brothers also owned other farms. Later they
divided up their property and dissolved partnership, and Mr. Richardson
removed to his own ranch at Nord, and added to it
until he had four hundred acres, which his widow controlled until her death, on
November 1, 1917. In October, 1907, they located at their home in Chico,
at 810 Third Street; and
afterwards he was appointed superintendent of the County
Infirmary. This
position he
held for about four years, when he retired, to reside in his home at Chico;
and there he died, on Thanksgiving Day, 1912. After Mr. Richardson's death, his
esteemed widow continued to reside at the family home in Chico
with her son, Harry E. Richardson, who manages the farm. Another son is Dr.
Richardson, who is in the furniture business at Chico.
J.
V. Richardson was married on October 3, 1873, at Nord, to Miss Martha A.
Crowder, who was born in North Carolina
on July 3, 1854, the daughter of Godfrey C. Crowder, who is represented in the
sketch of her brother, D. F. Crowder. They were Butte
County pioneers, who crossed the
plains in 1856. Mr. Richardson was a strong Democrat, and active in the
councils of his party.
