ROBERT CLYDE RAMSEY
In
his work as secretary of the Oroville Chamber of Commerce, R. C. Ramsey has
manifested marked ability as an organizer and as a civic leader. He has employed the most modern and effective
methods in the fulfillment of the manifold duties of his position, and he has
done much to assist in the development of the city and of Butte County, and to
acquaint and advise his fellow citizens in regard to local conditions and their
betterment.
R.
C. Ramsey was born at Big River, Virginia, June 20, 1870, a son of Dr. R. Y.
and E. R. (Strain) Ramsey, the former a native of Augusta County, Virginia, and
the latter of Rockbridge County, Virginia.
Mr. Ramsey secured his education in the public schools, and early in
life went to New Bloomfield, Missouri, and then to Concord, Missouri, while
from the year 1886 until 1921, he resided in Huntington, West Virginia. In that city for a period of thrity-six years, he was associated with the American Car
& Foundry Company, starting with this corporation as an office boy and
working his way through the various departments until he became assistant
district manager. In 1921, Mr. Ramsey
came to Oroville, California, as purchasing agent for the Feather River Pine
Mills, and remained in this position until January 1, 1929, when he assumed the
place of secretary of the local chamber of commerce. In the course of his work, Mr. Ramsey has
done some writing for newspapers on the possibilities of raising olives, oranges,
and other fruits of the Oroville district.
Oranges from this district receive the highest prices, as the season is
early, and they reach the market before the southern California oranges are
packed. It is frequently the case that
the packing houses of Oroville district are closed before those of southern
California are opened. Mr. Ramsey is a
Democrat in politics, and a member of the Oroville Rotary Club.
At
Huntington, West Virginia, on August 5, 1895, Mr. Ramsey was married to Miss
Marguerite F. Rider, who was born June 24, 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey have a son, Robert
Pritchard Ramsey, who married Dorothy Joyce Cotter of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania.
