JAMES FRANKLIN MOORE

JAMES FRANKLIN MOORE.—An untiring and successful horticulturist is exemplified in James Franklin Moore, who was born in Wapello County, Iowa, January 20, 1878.  The father, Henry Moore, was born in Illinois, and was engaged in coal mining near Des Moines, Iowa.  Robert Moore, the grandfather, was born in England and had come to Canada, later moving to Iowa, and finally coming to California with his son, where he died at Roseville Junction of heart trouble.  His son, Henry Moore, settled in Sutter County in 1882, where he farmed until his death in 1900.  James F. Moore’s mother was Josephine Gilland, a native of Iowa, who died two weeks after his birth; she was the mother of four children, two older than James F., who is one of twins.

James F. Moore, attended the schools in Sutter County, and assisted his father on the ranch until he was twenty-two years of age, when his father died and James Moore then went to work on various farms.  In September of the year 1902, with his family, he came to Chico, where they owned a small ranch located in the Bidwell school district.  Mr. Moore improved the ranch and set out an orchard, also purchasing a ten-acre ranch about a quarter of a mile from their home ranch and setting it out to prunes, peaches, and almonds.  In the same year Mr. Moore was employed to care for the eighty-acre orchard owned by Messrs. Simpson and Barham, and it is here, in conjunction with his own pursuits, that he now engaged.

Mr. Moore was united in marriage with Mrs. Carrie (Burch) Osborne, who was born in Missouri, and came with her parents to California as a young girl.  Mrs. Moor has two children by her first marriage:  Frank Osborne who lives at home, and Lester Osborne, who served six months in the One Hundred Fifty-ninth California Regiment till his discharge; he now resides in Chico.  Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Moore:  Jesse, now in high school, and Rose, who is in grammar school.

Mr. Moore is ambitious and interested in developing his ranches, making his home at his residence, on Cussick and Nord Avenues.  He is an active member of Great Oak Camp, No. 136, W. O. W.  Mrs. Moore is highly esteemed and is a member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft.
