GEORGE C. MANSFIELD

GEORGE C. MANSFIELD.--The author of this history, George C. Mansfield, was born in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, on November 9, 1880, a son of George Mansfield, a grain-buyer who, in 1887, removed with his family to California, settling in Nipomo, San Luis Obispo County, where for years Mr. Mansfield, Sr., was a grain- and bean-buyer and commission merchant. George C. Mansfield attended the Santa Maria High School, and later the Berkeley High School, graduating from the latter institution with the Class of 1898. He entered the College of Social Sciences of the University of California, graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Letters in 1902. During his college days he was a member of the Abracadabra Club, and took a prominent part in student activities. In his

senior year he was editor of the student newspaper, The Daily Californian. He was elected to membership in the Golden Bear, the senior honor society.

After graduating, Mr. Mansfield engaged in newspaper work, and taught in high schools at Visalia, Ventura, and Alameda. He resigned his position, as head of the Department of History in the latter school, to become the editor of the Press Review Publishing Company, which published a syndicated magazine section for the smaller dailies of the state. The San Francisco fire put the publication out of business, and Mr. Mansfield came to Oroville to become the editor of the Oroville Daily Register, in which paper he later acquired an interest. He has been the editor of the Register since 1906, and under his control the paper has been a force for good in city and county, and a big factor in the material advancement of the community.

On September 11, 1911, Mr. Mansfield was married to Miss Bertha  M. Simpson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Simpson of Honcut. At the time of their marriage Mrs. Mansfield was teaching school near Ripon, in San Joaquin County, where her work in school gardening had attracted much attention. Two children have been born to them: George Campbell Mansfield, Jr., who was born on April 5, 1913, and Henry Murdoch Mansfield, who was born on December 26, 1916.
