MATTIE R. LUND
Mattie
R. Lund, who is county treasurer and collector for Butte County, making her
home in Oroville, has been a lifelong resident of California, being a native of
Morgan Valley, Lake County. She was four
years of age when her parents, Ole B. and Bertha (Hammer) Lund, removed to
Butte County. Her father, a native of
Norway, came to America at the age of sixteen years and has crossed the
Atlantic five times. He has followed
various lines of business, including mining and carpentering. To him and his wife have
been born a son and five daughters.
The second, Irene Ethel, is deputy tax collector. Gertrude, the third daughter, is the wife of
Captain Gilbert, an army officer, who went overseas for service in the World
War and is now on duty in Washington, D. C.
Bert, who obtained his higher education in the University of California,
is also a World War veteran and is now with the state engineering department in
Sacramento. Helen, the fifth in order of
birth, was likewise graduated from the University of California and is now the
wife of E. R. Higgins, chief accountant for the department of public
works. Lilly, the youngest daughter,
died March 4, 1903.
Mattie
R. Lund, the first-born, attended the grammar and high schools of Oroville and
then entered the Oakland Polytechnic Business College, from which she was
graduated in August, 1907. With her
return to Oroville she secured the position of bookkeeper in a store known as
the City of Paris, with which she was connected for six years, resigning in
September, 1913, to accept a clerkship with the Natoma Consolidated Company of
California. She has figured prominently
in public affairs since 1914, when she became a candidate for the office of
county tax collector, winning the nomination over three opponents. At the general election she was given a large
majority and in January, 1915, assumed the duties of the office. Later the new Butte county charter was
adopted, whereby the offices of treasurer and tax collector were consolidated
under the official title of treasurer and ex-officio tax and license collector,
and to this position Miss Lund was elected August 27, 1918, followed by
reelection for another term. She has now
been tax collector for sixteen years and county treasurer for twelve years and
no higher testimonial of capability and fidelity to duty could be given that
her long retention in office.
Miss
Lund is a past president of Gold of Ophir Parlor, Native Daughters of the
Golden West and for two years was president of W. T. Sherman Relief Corps, the
woman’s auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic. She is secretary of W. T. Sherman Post, No.
96, G. A. R., and is past department patriotic instructor for California and
Nevada of the Woman’s Relief Corps. She
belongs to the First Congregational Church of Oroville, of which she has been
financial secretary for several years, and has always been active in church
work. She had the distinction of being
one of the first lady members of the Farm Bureau and was elected president of
the Tax Collectors Association of the State of California. She is identified with the Neighbors of
Woodcraft and also belongs to the Monday Club and to other organizations for
the benefit of the community and her labors have been
far-reaching and effective in behalf of public progress, reform and
improvement.
