HENRY MOORE LOCEY
HENRY MOORE LOCEY.—Although born in the State of Illinois, Henry Moore Locey is a representative of a family that has been identified with California since the pioneer days of the state. He was born in Clinton County, March 23, 1867, a son of I. H. Locey, a New Yorker by birth but a pioneer farmer of Illinois, where he married Matilda Moore, a native of that state. In 1874 the father brought the family to California and located in Chico, where he was employed for a year. His next employment was as manager of the Bidwell diary for two years, after which he ran the railroad nursery for some time. This was a stepping-stone towards more lucrative employment, and he was appointed superintendent in the State Forestry Department and held this position until he retired from active pursuits. He died in Chico. Mr. and Mrs. Locey had seven children, four of whom are now living, and of these, Henry Moore Locey is the youngest.
Henry M. Locey was reared in Chico and was educated in public and in private schools, attending Miss White’s school for a time. He entered the employ of the State Forestry Department with his father; then for a time he worked at ranching. In 1901, he entered the employ of the state as gardener at the Chico Normal, and since that time he has busily engaged in keeping the grounds in order. He put in the campus and has made all the improvements that have come in his line of work.
Mr. Locey was married, in Chico, to Miss Dottie Vernie Warren, a native of Nebraska. He is a member of the Woodmen of the World, and of the First Methodist Church. Always public-spirited, in the early days he joined the Western Hose Company, of which he served as treasurer. He is a member of the Exempt Firemen.
