MRS KATE CUMMINS LANE

MRS. KATE CUMMINS LANE.--A native daughter of California, and a woman of much business acumen and ability, Mrs. Kate C. Lane has made a success of nearly everything she has undertaken. She is very liberal and kindhearted and is very much interested in the preservation of the biographies of those men and women who have been developers of this great commonwealth. She was born in Colusa County and is a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Cummins, who is mentioned on another page of this work.

Kate Cummins was reared in Sutter County, whither her parents had moved, but they later settled at College City, Colusa County, in order to give their children the advantages of better educational facilities. Here the daughter completed her schooling at Pierce Christian College. On February 22, 1884, Kate Cummins was united in marriage with Asa Levy Lane, a native son of Colusa County. Mr. Lane was born on his father's ranch in 1865. His parents were L. C. and Amanda (Wright) Lane, the former born in Jo Daviess County, Ill., March 5, 1832, crossed the plains in 1849 and located at Dutch Flat, Placer County, Cal., where he remained until he moved, in 1861, to Knight's Landing, Yolo County, where he was an honored and respected farmer. He died on his ranch. His widow resides in Oakland.

The second in a family of ten children, Asa Levy Lane was reared to farm pursuits during the time he was attending Pierce Christian College. At the age of sixteen he met with an accident, being wounded by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of a comrade. When he had completed his college course he took up farming and followed it with good success on the Lane Ranch until he was able to purchase a place of his own. His first purchase was two hundred twenty acres of tule land, besides which he leased fourteen hundred acres for raising grain. He erected a comfortable house and suitable out-buildings for his needs and lived on the place until his death. He was a liberal, companionable man, an indulgent husband and father, and a helpful and public-spirited neighbor. He was a member of Tyranny Lodge, F. & A. M., at Dunnigan, and was a stanch Republican. He died January 29, 1897, aged thirty-two years.

After the death of Mr. Lane, Mrs. Lane sold the home place and, in 1904, located in Chico, where she has reared and educated her children. Her home is located on Chestnut Street, and besides this she owns the building on the corner of Second and Flume Streets, which she has remodeled and rebuilt into a modern apartment house. She keeps the apartments well furnished and the property is proving a satisfactory investment. She still owns her interest in the Cummins ranches in Sutter and Modoc Counties, and in Nevada. She also owns a summer cottage on Lake Almanor, near Chester, Plumas County, where she spends her summers. Mrs. Lane has three children: Ora Lee is a high school graduate and is now the wife of E. R. Bevins, First Lieutenant in the United States Army; Mrs. Bevins makes her home in San Francisco with her two children, Robert and WIlma. Asa Earl is an expert machinist and is foreman for the Yuba Construction Company; for four years he was master mechanic in Rancoqua, Chili; he married Mabel Shuster and they have one son, Earl. Alta Mae is a high school graduate and now the wife of Harold R. Ohleyer, who is connected with the Northern California Power Company of Chico; they have a son, Harold Raymond, Jr.

Mrs. Lane is a charter member of Golden State Chapter, O. E. S., at College City, but now belongs to Josephine Chapter at Chico. She is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and is a Prohibitionist in her political belief. The friends of Mrs. Lane are proud of the financial success she has made and of her managerial ability. She is a supporter of all public movements for the betterment of the social and moral conditions of Butte County, and in all good works she has modestly taken an important place.
