THOMAS   FRANK  HOWARD

THOMAS FRANK HOWARD.--An exceedingly busy rancher, who is operating a ranch of one hundred seventy-one acres ten miles south of Chico in Dayton Precinct, is Thomas Frank Howard, a native of Cowley County, Kans., where he was born April 1, 1875.  He was educated in the public school of his home district until he was eight years old, at which time his parents moved to Rawlins, Wyo., where he went to school for three or four years.  The next move took the family to Jackson County, Ore., where Thomas F. grew to young manhood and finished his education.  He worked on the home farm, when he was not in school, and learned the details of successful farming from his father, James R. Howard.  This parent passed away in the Imperial Valley, Cal., in 1912, at the age of seventy-four years.  The mother was Eliza Prather before her marriage, and she is living at Durham, in Butte County.

     T. F. Howard came to California from Oregon and was employed as a ranch-hand on a farm near Willows, Glenn County, for a time, after which he came to Butte County and continued farming in the vicinity of Durham.  He saved his money and after he had enough to make a start on his own account, he invested in the improvements on some land inherited by Mrs. Howard from her father.  This property he has been improving and developing ever since.  Here he raises grain, and he has erected a modern bungalow residence, good barns and fences, and has sunk a well that gives ample water for domestic and other needs.

In 1906, Mr. Howard and Miss Jessie A. Burdick, of one of the pioneer families of Butte County, were united in marriage.  This union has been blessed by the birth of two children, Charles Burdick and Merle Eva.  Mr. and Mrs. Howard have won a large circle of friends by their sterling integrity and cheerful disposition, and they are highly respected by all who know them.  They are always ready to cooperate, as far as their means will permit, with all worthy movements for the betterment of local conditions.
