SUEL JOSEPH VAN GOODEN
SUEL JOSEPH VAN GOODEN.—An enterprising and
progressive stockman is Suel Joseph Van Gooden, who
was born at De Pierre, Wis., in 1874, and came to California with his parents
in 1876, being reared in Cherokee, where he attended the public schools. Then
he followed mining, being employed by the Cherokee Mining Company. He purchased
a few head of cattle and drifted into the stock business. As his herd increased
he purchased a one hundred sixty-acre ranch from Chris Lynch, and as he
prospered he added to his original acreage until he has five hundred fifty
acres, all well watered by springs, making it an excellent stock ranch on which
he raises graded Shorthorn-Durham cattle. Mr. Van Gooden is road overseer under
supervisor H. W. White, having formerly served under E. C. Wilson, his
predecessor.
When Mr. Van Gooden married he chose for
his wife Maggie Lynch, a native daughter of Butte County, born at Cherokee,
whose father, Chris Lynch, was a pioneer stockman of Cherokee. They have three
children: Myrtle, Mrs. Pate, who resides near Cherokee; Victor is serving his
country in the war; and Irene, at home. Suel J. Van
Gooden’s parents were Victor and Stefan (Stuer) Van
Gooden, natives of Belgium, who migrated to Wisconsin and thence to California.
Mr. Van Gooden is a member of Cherokee
Lodge, No. 92, I. O. O. F., of which he is a Past Grand. In
politics he is a Republican.
