HOWARD FULTON

HOWARD FULTON.--A young man who by close attention to his duties has become acting manager of the Gridley Creamery and Ice Company, is Howard Fulton, a resident of California since 1893.  He is a Western man, having been born at Dallas, Ore., coming when a child to Dinuba, Cal., where he was reared, receiving a good education in the public and high school.  He quit school in his senior year and came to Chico, Cal.  In 1914 he entered the employ of the Gridley Creamery and Ice Company, becoming bookkeeper and secretary of the company, continuing with the company ever since.  He is now secretary and acting manager in the absence of its president and manager, W. P. Greene.  The company built the present plant about 1910, intending it for an ice plant and cannery, but changed it to a creamery and ice plant, manufacturing butter and ice, and having a very large trade.  They manufacture the “Melba” brand of butter, the surplus being shipped to the large cities.  Cream is purchased from a wide area, from Vina on the north into Yuba and Sutter Counties on the south.  They turn out three thousand pounds of butter a day.  Four automobile trucks are used for collecting cream and delivering the product.  In 1918 they enlarged the plant to nearly double its former capacity, and it is now one of the largest anywhere in this part of the county.  The company employs from twelve to sixteen hands and pays to farmers for cream approximately four hundred thousand dollars a year.  The creamery equipment is up to date and modern, as is also the ice and cold storage plant, being operated by electric power, with seventy-horse-power motors.  The place is carefully kept, particular attention being given to sanitary conditions, and cleanliness is strictly observed in every department of the plant.  Mr. Fulton is greatly interested in the growth and development of this section and aids all movements in the connection.
