EMIL ERICKSON
EMIL ERICKSON.--A native of Sweden, and an old and trusted employee of
the Diamond Match Company, is Emil Erickson. He and his partner, Gust Peterson,
have a contract for piling, loading and shipping all the lumber sawed by the
company’s saw mill, at Stirling City, which is
operated by F. M. Thatcher. He is an indefatigable worker, yet possesses social
qualities which make him a great favorite among his many friends at Chico and Stirling City. Emil Erickson was born on February 16, 1876,
in Krestenehavn,Venuland,
Sweden. He was the son of Erick and Mary (Person) Erickson, and was reared near
the beautiful Lake Venern. His education was received
in the common schools of his native country. Emil Erickson was the youngest of
a family of six children, and when about ten years of age his father died. In
1895, in company with his brother Gust Erickson, he immigrated to Hartford,
Conn. After three months’ residence there he left for scenes farther west,
locating at Rhinelander, Wis., where he found employment in a saw mill and soon
became a lumber grader. In 1902, Mr. Erickson made a trip back to his old
home to visit his mother, and after a stay of a few months he returned to
Wisconsin, bringing his mother with him and she remained in Wisconsin until her
death. Having a desire to try his fortune in the Golden West, in 1904 he
migrated to Chico, Cal., and secured employment with the Diamond Match Company
at Barber, where he became a yard foreman. He continued with the company in
that capacity until December, 1916, when the wholesale department was closed.
He had been in the yard from its very beginning. When the mill was started at Stirling City he was the first to be placed in charge of
the loading and shipping of the lumber from the mills, and when the wholesale
department was discontinued he came to Stirling City,
and with a partner, took the above contract.
On January 20, 1913, Emil Erickson was
united in marriage in Oroville with Emma Dahl, who was born in Haugesund, Norway, and was brought when a child to San
Francisco. She is the daughter of Thomas Dahl, a manufacturing cooper and owner
of vessels at Haugesund, who came to San Francisco
and entered the employ of Roth and Blum, where he now is.
Mr. and Mrs. Erickson’s home, both in
Chico and in Stirling City, has been the center of
happiness and hospitality. They are both held in high esteem in the community.
