LISTON K. CLARK

LISTON K. CLARK.—Liston K. Clark is a native of Chico, Butte County, Cal., born in 1882.  By strict integrity, close application to business, together with the courteous service rendered his patrons, he has built up a large and prosperous business in the city of his birth.  His grandfather, Joseph Clark, was a farmer in Somerset and Armstrong Counties, Pa.  He was one of eleven children, nine being sons, several of whom were in the Civil War.  He died in Armstrong County at the ripe old age of ninety-five and a half years.  The grandmother, Eliza (Gardner) Clark, was born in Somerset, Pa., and died at the age of seventy-five years.  She was the mother of six children of whom J. W. Clark, the father of Liston K. Clark, was the eldest.

The father, J. W. Clark, was born in Somerset County, Pa., April 29, 1833.  He was engaged in teaching and farming in Armstrong County, that state.  In 1863 he came by the way of the Isthmus of Panama to Marysville, Cal.  He taught six terms of school, also clerked at Wheatland.  Coming to Chico in 1875, he entered the employ of General Bidwell, remaining with him for fifteen years, having charge of the various interests connected with the large Bidwell ranch.  He died at his home in Chico, May 15, 1918.  The father was married in 1868, at Reed Station, to Miss Francis F. Kimble, who was born in Michigan and came to California via Panama in the sixties.  They had eight children:  Madge, now Mrs. Chandler of Stockton; Lizzie, deceased; Luella, now Mrs. Stapleton of Chico; Carrie, deceased; Adah, Mrs. Metcalf of Oakland; Zilpha, Mrs. Liederman, now of Sebastopol; Launa, now Mrs. Goodwin, living in San Francisco; and Liston K., our subject.

Liston K. Clark, next to the youngest, was brought up and educated in the Chico public school and the Chico State Normal.  Fifteen years ago he entered the Nichols hardware store as clerk, where he learned the hardware business, afterwards clerking for Mr. McFeeley.  In 1910 he entered the hardware business for himself, at the corner of Broadway and First Streets, where he still remains.  He has a commodious store-room, with an entrance on both streets, and does a general hardware, stove and house-furnishing business, also deals in agricultural specialties, auto supplies, etc., and has the agency for the Holt Machinery Company.  He resides on East Sacramento Avenue.

Mr. Clark was married, in San Francisco, to Ruby M. Rice, who was born in Michigan.  They have one son, Harold.  Mr. Clark began business in a small way but by energy and thrift has built up a large and prosperous business.  He is an influential member of the Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, is connected with the Presbyterian Church, and is well and favorably known in his native city and the surrounding country.
