JOHN M. BROUGH
JOHN M. BROUGH.--How much of the phenomenal prosperity of the
substantial Sacramento Valley Bank is due to the wise and practical management
of John M. Brough may be gathered from the fact that,
as the able and popular cashier, he has been at the helm of that flourishing
institution since 1903, when he succeeded its founder, G. K. Smith, and became
the heaviest stockholder. Born at Perth, Scotland, in February, 1862, Mr. Brough attended the grammar school of his native city and
also finished the high school courses there. Then he served an apprenticeship
of five years, in the same town, with the Perth branch of the British Linen
Bank, and having thus well equipped himself for the battle of life, he sailed
for Canada on attaining his majority.
Soon after his arrival in the Dominion he
took service with the Canadian Bank of Commerce, and for several years he
worked for that institution in Halifax and half a dozen other cities, still further
adding to his wide and valuable knowledge of the banking business. In 1903, Mr.
Brough came to California and settled at Biggs; and
almost immediately he became connected with the Sacramento Valley Bank, which
he has since served continuously.
While an active member of New Brunswick
society, Mr. Brough was married to Miss Hattie
Harris, of Wolfville, N. S., by whom he has had two
children: John H., the efficient manager of the Butte City Bank, and Margery
G., who resides at home. Mrs. Brough, who is well
known in Biggs social circles, is equally well known for her general ability
and for those rare qualities which have made her a most capable helpmate in
both business and civic affairs. Altogether, Mr. and Mrs. Brough
and family enjoy a popularity which is as deserved as it is real, the community
of Biggs undoubtedly being as pleased that Mr. Brough
cast his lines in their pleasant places as the Scotch gentleman is that he
moved westward and discovered their promising city.
